The Lopes struck first in the second with a pair of runs off an RBI single and an RBI double for an early lead, but Dustin Garcia quickly squared the game with a two-run shot over right field. The Lopes responded with a solo homer for the lead in the third inning and continued to build on it with a pair of runs in the fourth. After a one hour and twenty-five-minute lightning delay, the Lancers got back on track with an RBI single from Michael Carpentier to cut the deficit to two, and Josh Paino tied the game once again with another two-run shot in the sixth inning.

GCU loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning but only managed to get one run across after a much-needed double play by the Lancer defense. The Lopes ensured their win with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, securing the first win of the series by three runs. Garcia and Paino both ended the night with two hits and two RBI against the Lopes' pitching staff. Carpentier finished with two hits and one RBI, scoring a single run himself as well.
California Baptist is set to take on the Lopes again on Friday night in the second game of the series, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
