RIVERSIDE---Â California Baptist women's soccer program hosted the Western Athletic Conference favorites Utah Valley on Thursday night and opened the season with a highly competitive 1-1 draw. Faith Webber found the back of the net for the Wolverines in the first half, but Kaylee Hauck responded just 10 minutes later with the tying goal to move CBU to 5-1-4 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.
The California Baptist squad had a few new faces in the starting lineup for their first WAC match of the season. The Lancers welcomed back Lourdes Bosch from an injury and had Riley Goosen-Brown starting as a right back for the game. Bosch opened the game well and immediately impacted the midfield by creating several opportunities for the Lancers throughout the 90 minutes.
"There were some nerves in the first 10 minutes but overall I'm really proud of our team's heart, performance and resilience tonight," remarks head coach Kristen St. Clair. "After going down a goal early I thought our focus sharpened and we started to change the momentum resulting in Kaylee's goal to bring us back level."
UVU's leading goal scorer, Webber, delivered her tenth goal of the season in the tenth minute, but CBU continued to press against the Wolverine defense. The Lancers found an opportunity with a perfectly slotted ball from Jana Heinen to Morgan Witz, not even 10 minutes later. Witz flicked on the ball to Hauck, who one-timed it to the far-right corner with her left foot to score the tying goal.

After remaining tied at halftime, both squads had a few opportunities in the second half, but neither could find the back of the net for the game-winner. CBU's best chance in the last 10 seconds of the match after Bosch drove down the midfield and launched a shot to the top left corner of the goal that UVU's keeper got her fingertips on to ensure the tie. Both teams boasted 11 shots apiece, while UVU had five on frame compared to CBU's four. Noa Schumacher picked up four saves in total, putting her at 33 this season.
St. Clair added, "We made some adjustments at half time that helped us dominate the second half. We created some really dangerous scoring opportunities that narrowly missed. Our defense was very good shutting down any further scoring opportunities by our opponent. Now we go back to work and prepare for our Sunday opponent."
Hauck tallied her third goal against UVU, making her tied for the second most goals on the team with Frida Murrieta and Bosch. The Lancers have totaled 16 goals this season and have allowed just six in ten matches.
The Lancers will host Seattle University on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for their second WAC match of the season. Seattle opened the season with a 3-0 loss to Grand Canyon on Thursday evening.
