Lancers Upset #7 UC Santa Barbara To Close Out Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA - California Baptist University men's water polo secured arguably its most significant win in program history on Sunday, defeating #7 UC Santa Barbara by a score of 11-10 in the finale of the Triton Invitational. The victory marks the highest-ranked opponent the Lancers have defeated in the Division I era.

The CBU win against the Gauchos is the first in the seven-game history of this matchup. The Lancers close opening weekend at 1-3 after falling in the 8:00 a.m. game to #4 Stanford, 19-10.

Caleb Teraoka started the scoring, netting the opener in the first minute of action. Still, the Cardinal responded strongly in the first-ever meeting between these two programs, opening an 8-2 lead after the first period.

Logan Puhl posted his first hat trick of the season, scoring in the second, third, and fourth quarters, while Toring Stanley posted a team-high four points in the game with a pair of goals and assists.

This game stayed tight throughout, with the Lancers holding the biggest lead of the game at 9-6 going into halftime. The Gauchos responded with a four-goal run to take back the lead with under five minutes to go in the game. Teraoka and Stanley put the Lancers back on top for good after that.

Senior goalkeeper Trevor Benge was a force in game two on Sunday. Benge recorded a career-high 16 saves. He made 44 saves against top-ranked teams, his highest four-game total as a starter.

The Lancers will look to keep this momentum going on a second-straight road trip, heading across the country to participate in the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey. CBU is set to face Long Island University and the seventh-ranked host Tigers on Friday before taking on George Washington and Bucknell on Saturday.
