
WSOC Preview: CBU Set to Welcome Tarleton and Abilene Chistian as WAC Play Continues

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist women's soccer team opened Western Athletic Conference play last week with a 5-1 win over Southern Utah. Four different Lancers scored in a massive victory to kick off conference play 1-0, improving to 5-3-2 on the season. CBU will now welcome Tarleton and Abilene Christian for another pair of home matches and will look to continue their unbeaten streak.
THE LANCERS AT A GLANCE
California Baptist is coming off one of their highest-scoring games this season after dumping five goals on the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah. Four different Lancers and an own goal by SUU scored for CBU, marking one of the most productive offensive games yet and Head Coach Kristen St. Clair's deep bench. Three of the four scorers came off the bench for the Lancers, while starter Lauryn White found the back of the net off a beautiful cross from Kaylee Hauck. Nikki Mau and Daisy Miller scored their first collegiate goals against Southern Utah, while sophomore Sophia Petrov nailed her first of the season.
There have been nine different goal-scorers this season across CBU's 13 scored. Hauck, Ava Westlund, and White lead California Baptist with two goals on the season so far. Morgan Witz has been creative on the attack, leading the squad with four assists on the year and one goal of her own. On the flip side, the Lancer's backline has only given up six goals and has never lost by more than one goal. Defensive Preseason Player of the Year Taylor Summit made her return to the pitch on Saturday evening to open conference play, playing for 90 minutes and delivering a strong defensive performance.

MATCH NOTES
The Lancers will kick off the second week of Western Athletic Conference play with Tarleton before welcoming ACU on Sunday. CBU has never lost to the Texans, boasting a 2-0 series record against Tarleton, and bested the Texans 3-1 in Stephenville last season. The Lancers have never recorded a loss against Abilene Christian and own a 1-0-1 record against the Wildcats. CBU handled ACU during the 2023 season with a 3-0 win in Texas, contributing to the historic 15-game unbeaten streak.
THE TEXANS AT A GLANCE
Tarleton owns the most wins this season in the WAC standings, holding a 6-4-3 overall record, and is currently 0-1 in conference play. The Texans opened their conference season against front-runners Utah Valley and battled the Wolverines well in Utah but ultimately fell 5-2. Tarleton managed to score against UVU after allowing a pair of goals in the opening minutes and continued to chip at the Wolverine's lead, going down by three goals to UVU.
The Texans have been generating quite a bit of offense this season, scoring 23 goals compared to allowing 12. Sophomore Lauren Grisson leads Tarelton with four goals this season, scoring all four against Austin off the bench. The sophomore attacker has been quiet during the last five matches but is expected to break out during conference play. Mikayla Kendall has totaled 58 saves between the posts for the Texans, starting all 13 games for Tarleton this season.
THE WILDCATS AT A GLANCE
Abilene Christian currently sits with a 2-3-6 overall record this season and holds a 0-1 WAC record thus far. The Wildcats opened the conference season with a 3-1 loss to Seattle U, who was picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll. The Redhawks took control of the conference opener from the first half, unleashing three unanswered goals on ACU until the 89th minute when the Wildcats found the back of the net. ACU will now play Grand Canyon on Thursday before heading to Riverside for the weekend duel.
The Wildcats have struggled this season offensively and scored just seven goals in 11 matches while giving up 15 goals defensively. Chayse Thorn and Peyton Hill lead the squad with two goals each while also owning an assist each. Four different goalkeepers have seen action this season with ACU, with Lili Ross leading the way with eight matches started. Ross has allowed seven goals this season while tacking on 29 saves.
