CBU Blanks Utah Tech for a Crucial Three Points

ST. GEORGE, UT--- The California Baptist women's soccer team took home three points on Saturday evening after earning a 1-0 victory against Utah Tech at Greater Zion Stadium. A first-half goal from Taylor Held put the Lancers ahead and was ultimately the game-winner, securing a 3-1 Western Athletic Conference record and are now 7-4-2 overall.
The Lancers pressed from the get-go in Utah, firing eight shots across the first 45 minutes of the half. In the 37th minute, CBU drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box, and Morgan Witz delivered a beautiful cross that Held finished with her head for her first goal of the season. Witz leads the Lancers with six assists and is now tied for the most in WAC.
The Trailblazers continued to test the Lancer's backline, firing five shots on frame but Mikayla O'Brien blanked UTU with five saves on the evening. Utah Tech's best opportunities came throughout the 90 minutes with their six corner kicks, with four in the first half and two in the second. The competitive match saw a total of 29 fouls between both squads and three yellow cards were awarded, with two for CBU and one for UTU.
"I'm really proud of the composure, heart, and class our team showed tonight. To earn 3 points on the road in a conference as challenging as ours is no easy task. Our juniors and seniors were instrumental in leading us tonight," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair.
"Morgan Witz hit a brilliant set piece service to Taylor Held, who rose above the crowd to head the ball into the net for the game-winning goal. Mikayla O'Brien came up with an important save when called upon, and our back line showed their quality once again. We'll enjoy this result tonight and look forward to getting home for rest and returning to the training field," finished St. Clair.
California Baptist will now turn its attention to a Thursday match in Orem, Utah, against the WAC favorites, Utah Valley, before heading to Washington on Sunday to face Seattle U.
