CBU Finishes out the Indiana Classic 2-2

BLOOMINGTON--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team rounded out the Indiana Classic with matchups against Salem and #8 Michigan. The Lancers split the day with a blowout win over Salem and a tight loss to the 8th-ranked Wolverines.

GAME #1 vs. Salem:

The Lancer's offense came to play in the opening match of the day, scoring 24 goals in a blowout win over Salem. The win was the third of the season for the Lancers and the second time CBU has posted 20+ goals in a match this season.

The offensive showcase began early, with six goals finding the net in the opening period for CBU. Dora Lehoczky was responsible for two of those goals, while her teammates Morgan Gates, Reese Beringer, Kyra Kahahawai, and Madison Haworth all punched in goals for the Lancers.

CBU scored five unanswered goals to open the second period, with Celeste Almendariz and Emaly Hutton scoring four to open up an 11-1 advantage on the Tigers. Salem would find the back of the net twice in the waning minutes, but the Lancers would cancel those out with two of their own, including one from Cayleigh Carter, to make the score 13-3 heading into halftime.

The Lancers would once again come out of a period break on fire, scoring five of the first six goals to begin the third period. CBU would tack on six more goals in the final period to finish off the Tigers 24-9.

Four Lancers posted hat tricks in the match, led by Lehoczky and Aubrey Newton, who each registered four goals. Hutton and Almendariz combined for six goals on seven shots, with Almendariz going perfect on her attempts. Gates, Grace Bergquist, and Haworth also registered multiple goal performances in the match as the Lancers converted a blistering 71% of their shots.

In goal, Tyanna Schneider and Amelia Urry each had two periods of action combined for 12 saves and six steals while only allowing nine goals.

GAME 2 vs. MICHIGAN:

The second match of the day for the Lancers saw CBU test the #8 Michigan before ultimately falling 17-9. The match started with fireworks on both sides as the two squads combined for eight goals in the first period. One of Hutton's two goals of the morning tied the game 4-4 after eight minutes.

The Wolverines started the second period strongly, scoring five of the first seven goals of the frame. Bergquist scored off a power play from a Cayleigh Carter assist to bring the score to 9-7 in favor of Michigan heading into halftime. The Wolverines put the match away in the third period, outscoring the Lancers 4-1 to open a five-goal lead. The Wolverines would tack on four more in the final period to claim the match 17-9.

Almendariz, Hutton, and Bergquist concluded strong tournament performances with multiple goals against Michigan. Hutton and Almendariz led the Lancers in goals for the tournament with 11 and nine, respectively. Schneider ends an impressive tournament performance with 52 saves on the weekend, including a career-high 18 against Indiana in the opener.

NEXT: The Lancers will return to SoCal for a road match at Azua Pacific on Thursday, February 22, at 3 PM to open Gold Coast Conference Play.
