SEATTLE - California Baptist senior guard Chloe Webb posted her team-leading sixth double-double of the year, finishing with a stat line of 33 points and ten rebounds to lead CBU past Seattle U, 86-77, in the Emerald City. Webb's second game of 30 or more is tied for the most in the conference this season, and her 20.8 points per game average is tied for 16th in the nation. The Lancers' fourth straight win improves them to 17-2 overall and 9-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Webb wasn't the only one to pop off for CBU as reigning WAC Player of the Week Filipa Barros nearly had a double-double of her own with 21 points, nine boards, and five assists. Kinsley Barrington battled early foul trouble and the task of guarding the Redhawk's best player and succeeded with 15 points for herself while holding SU's Maya Moore to just 4-7 shooting from the field. Anaiyah Tu'ua also broke double figures today, scoring 10 points on 3-5 shooting from the field and dished out three assists.
The Redhawks opened the contest red hot, jumping out to a 12-2 lead before the first media break. Head coach Jarrod Olson called an early timeout to regroup, and his Lancers answered the call, going on an 11-3 run of their own and eventually closing the frame at a 22-all tie. CBU sprinted out of the gates in the second, opening the period on a 15-5 run before Seattle answered with seven straight before a Webb layup got the game to its 39-34 halftime score.
The third quarter was an offensive flurry, with the two teams matching each other at 28 points apiece, led by ten from Barros. At one point in the third, the Redhawks used a 10-2 run to make it a one-score game at 51-49 with 5:43 to go. Webb, Barros, and Anaiyah Tu'ua would lead CBU offensively through the rest of the quarter as the Lancers held a 67-62 advantage heading into the fourth.
Three of CBU's first four scores in the fourth were from distance, quickly rebuilding a double-digit lead. The game would never be closer than seven after that quick start, peaking at a dozen, before a final second three-pointer from Seattle gave us the final score of 86-77.
Foul trouble would once again become a factor for the Lancers this season as neither Barrington nor Emily Sewell would escape the third quarter without their fourth fouls each. Webb and Barros would reach the penultimate penalty mark in the fourth quarter, but CBU would lock down and complete the game without a foul out, just four on the brink.
In a rare turn of events, CBU lost the rebounding battle for just the fifth time this season, 44-37, but dominated in other areas that more than made up for that. The Lancers outscored the Redhawks 15-0 on fastbreak opportunities and doubled up the home team in the paint, 44-22. Both teams finished the game identically from the free throw line, shooting 81.8% on 18-22 from the stripe.
The Lancers will play a home-and-away schedule next week, starting the two-game series on the road at UT Arlington on Thursday before heading back to Riverside for a Saturday showdown with Utah Tech.
