ARLINGTON, TX - A physical game in Texas came down to the wire, with Chloe Webb coming up huge in the final seconds to secure the win for California Baptist over UT Arlington, 94-92. Webb's layup with 1.5 seconds left in the game gave CBU their tenth conference win, making it four straight seasons with a double-digit WAC win total.
Webb posted her conference-leading third game with 30 or more points, dropping 32 against the Lady Mavs, with seven boards and three steals. Nhug Bosch Duran and Kinsley Barrington each put up 14 points, alternating halves as the Spaniard did the bulk of her damage in the first half, and Barrington put in the extra work in the second. Nae Nae Calhoun also put up double-figures in the points column, hitting a trio of timely three-pointers while dishing out a team-high seven assists.
The game's opening quarter was one of runs as the Lancers opened an early eight-point lead before UTA answered with a 13-2 run of their own to take a two-point lead. CBU would close the frame with a 7-3 run to own a one-point advantage at the end of the first ten minutes.
The second quarter saw an uptick in scoring as CBU increased its lead to four at the half, with much of that help coming as the Lancers went 10-12 from the free-throw line in just that quarter.
Barros may have had a lesser night than she's been accustomed to lately, but a steal, and an and-one layup, and converted a free throw with four minutes left in the game to put CBU back on top by six and was huge for the Lancers as the Lady Mavs would respond with a 6-0 run to tie it up. Barrington was massive in the second half, scoring 11 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter despite playing that entire frame with four fouls.
Webb scored 14 and 10 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, highlighted by scoring the final five points for CBU to secure the victory.
Both teams shot well at all three levels of the court on Thursday, but the Lancers' coming up +7 in the turnover battle and outscoring UTA 17-10 off of those turnovers could be viewed as the underlying key to tonight's success.
CBU will come home late Thursday night and begin preparation for Utah Tech, who comes to Riverside on Saturday, February 10. The 1:00 p.m. tipoff will be the 22nd meeting between these two teams, with CBU dominating the matchup 17-4 since 2006 and 4-1 since both teams were elevated to the Division I ranks.
