Simon Breaks All-Time Career Home Run Record During CBU's Third Shutout of the Weekend

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist baseball program closed out its series with Stephen F. Austin on Saturday morning after dominating the Lumberjacks 10-0 in an eight-inning game. The Lancers improved to a 22-13 overall record and now hold an 11-4 Western Athletic Conference record, landing the squad in first place as of Saturday night in the conference standings.

It was a weekend of program bests for California Baptist during the sweep of SFA. Mitchel Simon knocked a solo shot in the final game of the weekend for his 52nd career home run, breaking the CBU baseball program record for all-time career home runs which was previously held by class of 2007 CBU alum Aaron Seuss. The Lancers also had a program first after shutting out the Lumberjacks in a three-game series. No other team in CBU Baseball history has achieved such a stat.

After Simon's record-breaking home run in the third inning, Nicholas Dumesnil followed suit with a solo shot drilled down the left-field line for his ninth homer of the season. The runs kept coming for the Lancers, but a five-run eighth inning that was highlighted by a two-RBI double from Mark Kirkland and an RBI single from Dumesnil ultimately enacted the run rule for CBU's third shutout win of the weekend.

The Lancer's pitching was once again stellar as Brandon Downer threw six innings and allowed just four hits while sitting down six Lumberjacks. The three shutouts dropped the staff's ERA to 3.76, bumping the squad back into the top 10 lowest team ERAs in the nation.

California Baptist is now the second WAC team to achieve two series sweeps this season after outscoring SFA 27-0 across 24 innings of action. The Lancers will continue their season on Monday afternoon as they welcome UNLV to Totman Stadium.
