RIVERSIDE--- A solid showing from the California Baptist University women's water polo came up a bit short on Saturday afternoon as they battled the #6 Loyola Marymount Lions to a 17-13 result in Riverside.
The 13 goals were the most CBU has put on the board in any Gold Coast Conference match this season and the most they have put up in a loss in 2024. The 13 goals were also the most goals scored against the Lions this season and the most scored on them in a full calendar year. The Lions increased their win streak to 17 following the road victory and are now 24-2 on the year. CBU drops to 3-3 in conference play and is tied for fourth place in the standings with San Diego State.
CBU had the top-ranked Lions on the ropes early, holding a 2-1 lead on the Lions in the early portion of the first period. LMU would rally and rattle off four straight goals to regain control, but CBU would not go away and answered back with a 3-1 run of their own. The Lions would tack on two of the final three goals of the period and would cling to an 8-6 lead heading into halftime.
The third period was all LMU as they would score the opening four goals of the period and outscore CBU 5-1 overall in the period to open up their largest lead at seven goals. The Lancers did not show any quit and would put four unanswered goals on the board in the fourth period, including two from Kyra Kahahawai to cut the deficit to three goals with under three minutes to play. LMU would stave off the comeback with a pair of late-game goals and ultimately claim the match 17-13.
Multiple Lancers put forth huge efforts despite the loss, including a four-goal masterpiece from Kahahawai to log a new season-high. Delilah Moreno and Cayleigh Carter were also brilliant for the Lancers and tied Kahahawai for the team lead in points with four. Carter netted two goals while dishing out a pair of assists, while her teammate Moreno had one goal and got her teammates involved with three assists.
