CBU's Comeback Falls Short in Santa Barbara

After the Gauchos tallied five runs in the first two innings, it was Josh Paino who began the comeback for California Baptist. The junior shortstop ripped a homer over left field for a pair of RBI that cut UCSB's lead to just three in the top of the third.

UCSB added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to five runs, but CBU struck back in the top of the sixth after loading the bases with just a single out. Jake Skipworth stepped up the plate and delivered an RBI single that would be the catalyst for a five-run inning for CBU. After Matthew Darr brought home another run after being hit by a pitch, Garret Ostrander knocked a well-placed single for his first RBI of the day and set up Nicholas Dumesnil to knot the game 7-7 with his seventh double of the year.
After a scoreless seventh inning thanks to solid pitching and defense on both sides, the Gauchos launched a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth that ultimately secured the game for the home team. Michael Carpentier rallied CBU during the squad's final at-bat and knocked his 17th double of the season before Mitchel Simon moved the catcher into scoring position. The final Lancer batters were unable to make contact with the bat to bring Carpentier home in the end, dropping CBU to 12 losses on the year.
Paino and Dumesnil left Santa Barbara with a pair of RBI and a lone hit, while Connor McGuire, Simon, and Ostrander each tallied two hits off the UCSB pitchers. From CBU's mound, the Lancer pitching staff notched five strikeouts total across eight innings.
Western Athletic Conference is back this weekend as the Lancers take on the Hornets beginning Friday in Sacramento, California, at 4 p.m.
