PHOENIX, AZ--- The California Baptist baseball program opened a crucial Western Athletic Conference series with Grand Canyon on Friday evening and dropped the first game of the weekend 11-1. What started a competitive match-up got away from the Lancers in the fifth inning and a six-run eighth inning triggered the run-rule, improving GCU to 27-18 on the season and 17-5 in WAC play. CBU moves to 29-17 on the year and now holds a 14-8 conference record.
Grand Canyon struck first in the bottom of the second inning via an RBI single, but the Lancers responded well and posted their first and only run of the evening after Mitchel Simon laced a single through the right side. GCU would tally another single run in the third, but a quiet fourth inning on both sides made for a competitive first half of the opening contest. The fifth inning was one of the most successful for the home team after knocking a pair of homers over the right field wall for a trio of runs that extended GCU's lead to 5-1. Another six runs in the eighth secured an 11-1 Friday night win and the first game of the series for the Lopes.
This is the third time the Lancers have been run-ruled in conference play this season. California Baptist will return to Grand Canyon University on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. with a chance to even the series in the second installment of the three-game WAC weekend.
