RIVERSIDE--- Former California Baptist University men's basketball standout guard Taran Armstrong signed his first NBA contract on Sunday as he inked a two-way deal with the Golden State Warriors.
Armstrong spent two seasons with the Lancers before going home to Australia to play professionally in the National Basketball League for the Cairns Taipans. Armstrong averaged 11 points, six assists, and five rebounds per game in his two seasons with the Lancers and was named Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2022. Armstrong was also an All-WAC Second Team member in 2023 and is still the DI-era record holder for most assists in a single season (164) and assists per game (6.3). Armstrong was also the first Lancer in program history to record a triple-double, doing so with a line of 16 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds against San Jose State as a freshman. Armstrong also holds the four best single-game assist marks in program history, including a program record of 15 assists, which he recorded against North Dakota in 2021.
Armstrong is the first former Lancer to earn a contract in the NBA and will also be the first Tasmanian-born player to make an NBA roster. Armstrong averaged over 17 points and nearly five assists per game in his final season with the Taipans.
The two-way contract will allow Armstrong to split time between the Warriors and their G-League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors, during the remainder of the 2024-25 season. The Warriors, led by Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler, are currently 30-27 and are riding momentum following the acquisition of Butler at the trade deadline. Armstrong figures to be one of multiple guards in the rotation for the Warriors, joining the likes of Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Gary Payton II, and Buddy Hield, among others.
