RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist baseball program suffered heartbreak on Saturday evening after welcoming the University of Utah to Totman Stadium. The game came down to the final wire, but the Utes ultimately took the 4-3 win to lengthen the Lancer's losing streak to six games. CBU moves to 4-7 on the season, while Utah improves to 9-2.
Cody New stole the show on the mound after the sophomore left-hander started the game for the Lancers and dealt a very impressive five innings. Despite striking out the first three batters of the game, a dropped third strike saw a Ute get on after Trevor Spainhoward could not complete the throw to first. From there, the Lancer's defense failed to back up solid pitching from New after a pair of errors saw two runs come home.
CBU managed to cut the Ute's lead in half with an RBI from Bubba Rocha that scored Jake Brown for a 2-1 ballgame. Ryan Kim would knock a home run 407 feet to tie the game with his second homer this season. New threw 41 pitches in the first inning alone and remained in the game through the fifth inning, allowing just a single hit and no earned runs and striking out 11 Utes before tapping out at 104 pitches. The sixth inning saw Utah score a single run with the bases loaded after the batter was hit by a pitch, but the Lancers responded well by knotting up the score once again via a Connor Ross home run.
Utah ultimately stole the game in the top of the seventh after scoring on a throwing error to secure the 4-1 win. CBU attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth and put two runners on, but Nicholas Dumesnil grounded into a double-play that put the nail in the coffin. Despite the loss, the Lancer pitching staff had a tremendous game and set a new CBU NCAA Division I single-game record with 18 strikeouts across four arms. New led the way with 11, Ryne Palmer tallied four, Cameron Teper struck out a pair, and Noah Smith posted one.
California Baptist will finish out the four-game spread with a trip across town to UC Riverside for the final game of the weekend at The Plex at 5 p.m.
