Kittredge Leads Lancers to Series Win Over Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ--- Ryan Kittredge tossed the best game of his collegiate career on Sunday morning in New Jersey and led the California Baptist baseball program to a series win over Power 4 Rutgers University after securing the final game 4-1. Kittredge threw 7.2 innings of work and limited the Scarlet Knights to three hits, improving CBU's season record to 10-10.

The Sunday finale was very competitive as both squads dueled for the series win, but a crucial three-run seventh inning for the Lancers was ultimately the difference. Small ball put CBU on the board in the top of the second, but the game would stay quiet until the final third as both teams were stumped by the pitching on the mound. Kittredge held down the defense on the visitor's side after working efficiently through his seven innings after throwing 100 pitches, sitting down five Scarlet Knights, and walking just one batter. CBU's seventh inning saw Nicholas Dumesnil break the stalemate with an RBI single that scored Julian Alvarez before Ben Castelli knocked a bases-clearing double for two RBI of his own.

Rutgers found a bit of momentum in the bottom of the ninth after loading the bases with no outs. However, Julian Orozco forced a ground ball that the Lancer defense was able to turn two off of before Castelli picked up the final out of the game with a toss to Cole Howarth. Castelli had the best day offensively for the Lancers after going three-for-four at the plate and tallying two RBI, while Dumesnil secured a pair of hits during his four at-bats.

The road series win is CBU's first of the season and the program's second Power 4 series win after the 2023 California Baptist baseball squad bested Oklahoma in Norman 2-1 during opening weekend.

The Lancers will now return to the West Coast for a midweek tilt against San Diego State before beginning Western Athletic Conference play next weekend against Utah Tech.
