RIVERSIDE --- It wasn't easy, but the Lancers got the job done on Saturday with a 58-55 victory over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. The win gives CBU back-to-back conference victories, while extending the Lancers' home unbeaten streak to a dozen games.
The Lancers sit 2-3 through five WAC games, with both wins coming on this short two-game homestand. The Lancers are 7-0 inside the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center and extend their home win streak to 12 games, dating back to last season. CBU's last home loss was coincidentally a three-point finish against Southern Utah.
SUU drops to 0-4 in conference action.
"We're grateful for the win, we really are," said head coach Rick Croy. "I thought our talk was good in the huddles. We had a hard time transferring our positive talk into positive play, but we guarded tonight. I knew Southern Utah was going to be a hungry, gritty team, and we guarded just well enough to get out of here with a win."
It took 2:12 of game time before the Lancers dropped their first bucket, a 3-pointer from Jayden Jackson. CBU never relinquished that lead as they owned the scoreboard for the remaining 37:48 of regulation.
The Lancers' lead touched as high as 12 on Saturday, that coming with 2:55 remaining in the second half, but with every CBU run, a subsequent run from the Thunderbirds was to follow.
CBU's halftime advantage was just two, 24-22, due to a 5-0 run from SUU in the final four seconds of the half. CBU led by seven, but a layup from Elijah Duval was extended to an and-one opportunity thanks to a CBU foul. Duval missed the free throw, but SUU pulled down the offensive board, setting up Tanner Hayhurst for a triple at the horn.
When the Lancers pushed their lead to 12 late in regulation, SUU responded with a 9-1 run, with all SUU baskets coming off 3-pointers. The Thunderbirds cut CBU's lead to two with 19 seconds remaining, and after a Dominique Daniels Jr. free throw, the lead moved up to three.
On a last-second push, the tying attempt rimmed out, and after SUU's 14th offensive rebound of the night, a following attempt rolled off the rim as time expired.
Daniels Jr. led the game with 20 points, his 11th 20-point performance of the season. Jackson wrapped up the night with 13 points. Thomas Ndong paired eight points with a game-high 11 boards.
The Lancers outrebounded the Thunderbirds, 47-42.
"All you can do is go back to work, and that's what these guys will do," added Croy. "They'll go back to work, and we'll make sure we're better the next time out. We have to go back on the road next week and really figure some things out. Our guys are excited about that."
Saturday wrapped up a short homestand for the Lancers as next comes to trip to Texas for one game on Thursday at Abilene Christian. CBU will return to the Fowler Events Center on January 21 to host Utah Tech. Utah Valley will be in Riverside on January 24 for Star Wars Night.
