RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team concludes its three-game homestand on Saturday afternoon, besting the Tarleton State Texans 80-68.
The win helps the Lancers remain perfect in conference play at 3-0 and a perfect 4-0 against the Texans at home in the series history. Tarleton State falls to 1-2 in conference play and 7-7 overall.
The Lancers' three-point shooting was the story of the night, and that was on full display from the opening tip. The Lancers would shoot a DI-era program's best 63% from the perimeter with 15 makes on 24 attempts. CBU would hit three in the opening period, including two deep hits from Khloe Lemon off the bench. CBU led by as many as 11 points in the opening frame.
The three-point avalanche continued in the second period with Lauren Olsen driving the train. The true freshman would score 15 of her 20 points in the frame, hitting all six of her field goal attempts. The Lancers as a unit shot a blistering 76% from the field in the frame as they would extend their lead to 25 points at the halftime break, 49-24.
Tarleton State came out of the locker room on a 6-0 run to force Jarrod Olson to regroup his squad. A Filipa Barros triple would immediately follow the timeout as the Lancers did not let their foot off the gas from the perimeter. Barros would make three triples in total in the frame as the Lancers continued to lead big over the Texans. The visitors would slash the lead to as few as 12 points in the fourth quarter as the Lancers closed them out 80-68 at the final whistle.
Olsen led the scoring once again for CBU with 20 points on 8-12 shooting, while Barros would collect another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds to pair with five assists. Shawnee Nordstrom continues to make the most of her starting minutes with 12 points, while Lemon was the other Lancer in double-figures with 11 points off the bench.
The perimeter scoring was the difference in the victory, with the Lancers outscoring Tarleton State by 24 points in that department. CBU shot 63% from the perimeter on 15-24 shooting, which is the best mark in the DI era and the second-best overall mark in program history (minimum 10 made threes). The Lancers shot 55% from the field as a team, which is by far their best display of the season.
NEXT: The Lancers will hit the road for the first time in conference play next week as they travel to the Beehive State to take on Utah Tech and Southern Utah.
