RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's water polo team remained undefeated at the Lancer Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon as they defeated #25 CSUN and Biola at the Mini Joust.
The wins move CBU to 5-2 in the early going of the non-conference schedule, and the victory over #25 CSUN marks its second-ranked win of the season, already after beating #19 UCSB at home on opening day. CBU's 5-2 start is its best start to a season since 2020, when they finished 13-4 overall in a COVID-shortened season.
GAME 1 vs CSUN:
The Lancers opened with a ranked matchup against the CSUN Matadors, looking to make it five straight home wins over the Matadors since 2022. CBU made the first scoring run in the match with a 3-0 run to end the first and begin the second period, capped off by a Niya Bumbaba penalty shot. The goal would give CBU an early 5-2 lead over the Matador and cause a subsequent timeout. Ashley Strickland of CSUN would single-handedly get the Matadors back in the game with three straight goals to tie the match late in the first half. Bella Raynes and Emmie Ramirez would net late goals for the Lancers to give them the 7-5 lead at the half.
Ramirez would score again to begin the second half to give CBU its second three-goal lead of the match, but that would be once again quickly erased with a Matador response. CSUN would score three of the next four goals to pull within one at the end of the third period. CSUN tied the match early in the fourth period, but the Lancers would land the final knockout punch with a 4-0 run in the fourth period, including two more goals from Ramirez to eventually claim the victory 17-14 over CSUN.
Ramirez and Bumbaca were the driving forces of the offense, each registering seven points in the match. Ramirez would net four goals on 12 shots, while Bumbaca would dish out five assists to pair with her two goals. Reese Beringer and Delilah Moreno would each secure hat tricks with three goals apiece, while Georgia Eccles and Madison Haworth would have three points apiece off the bench.
GAME 2 vs BIOLA:
CBU would conclude its day with a late afternoon tilt with the Biola Eagles. The Lancer defense would lead the way in the victory as they would smother the Eagles early and often.
The Lancers would hold the Eagles scoreless through the opening ten and a half minutes before they finally netted one off a powerplay in the second period. CBU's offense was steady throughout as they would find themselves up 6-1 after the opening 16 minutes of action. Biola would pull within four goals in the third period with a pair of early goals, but the Lancers would score seven of the final eight goals in the match to secure the 14-4 victory.
Bumbaca would shine once again offensively with a hat trick while also showing off her defensive prowess with three steals. 11 different Lancers would score in the match, illustrating the team's depth, and three different goalkeepers would get in the rotation as well. The keeper trio of Amelia Urry, Aleksandra Antanasijevic, and Kendall Donahue would combine for ten saves in the match while only allowing a combined four goals.
NEXT: The Lancers will head to the East Coast next weekend to compete in the Villanova Invite beginning on Friday, February 6.
