NORTHRIDGE, CA--- The California Baptist University baseball team extended its winning streak to six games on Tuesday evening as they would hold off a late CSUN rally to defeat the Matadors 9-7 in extra innings on the road.
The win avenged a 5-7 home loss the Lancers suffered in late February at the hands of CSUN and will be the fourth win over their future Big West opponent in the DI era. The victory is the 38th of the season, tied for the team's best win total since 2021.
It was a relatively slow start for both offenses in the game, but that would all be erased with the first of two Riley Hunsaker home runs in the top of the third. Hunsaker would not have to wait long to get on the board, as he would step up to the plate at the top of the fourth and would score Diesel Toth and Connor Ross for the early 4-0 lead. The Lancers would tack on another run in the fifth as a Ross sacrifice fly would bring home Chris Ramirez. CSUN joined the scoring in the bottom of the fifth as the lead-off batter would launch a homer to deep left field. Two more CSUN hits would produce another run on the board for the home team, but the Lancers would mitigate the damage and halt the scoring with a pair of groundouts to end the inning.
The Lancers' offense got jump-started again in the eighth inning, beginning with a double down the right side to get into scoring position. Toth would advance to third on a wild pitch before Cole Howarth would bring him home with a single. Howarth would advance on a Matador throwing error and then be subsequently brought home on a Matt Chavez double to make it 7-2 in favor of the road team.
CSUN would attempt a final rally in the bottom of the ninth, leading off with a solo shot from Will Liberg to slice the lead down to four. Another moon shot from CSUN's Kyle Panganiban would tack on two more runs with no outs on the board. Niko Urquidi would sub in and would get the first out of the inning on a fly out, but CSUN's hot bats continued with two more home runs that would tie the game and send it to extra innings.
After a scoreless tenth inning, the Lancers would score what proved to be the game-winning runs in the top of the 11th, capitalizing on some critical CSUN errors. A fielding error would open the scoring with Ryder Dykstra coming home before a Carter Eberhard single would score Connor Ross to give the Lancers the lead back at 9-7. CSUN would garner two hits in the bottom of the eleventh, but a 6-4-3 double play would end the game and secure the road win.
Hunsaker and Hansen paced the offense with three hits apiece, led by Hunsaker with four RBI and two home runs. Carson Olsen was credited with the win in his relief capacity, while Bryan Peck earned the save, securing the final two outs for the Lancers.
The Lancers will begin their final conference series of the year this Friday at Totman Stadium as they welcome the Sacramento State Hornets.
