Joe Pierre III joined CBU in April of 2026 as an inaugural member of Kyle Getter’s coaching staff. Pierre joined the Lancers after spending the 2025-26 season as the Assistant Coach/Defensive Coordinator for Furman University.
In his one season with the Paladins, Furman finished 22-13, highlighted by a 76-61 victory over ETSU in the Southern Conference Championship Game. Furman earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, where they were eliminated in the First Round by eventual runner-up Connecticut.
Furman held opponents to 70.8 PPG in the 2025-26 season while outscoring teams by 5.5 PPG. The Paladins posted a 5.1 round margin and outshot opponents by just under five percent per game.
Before accepting his role with Furman, Pierre spent seven seasons on coach Ritchie McKay’s staff at Liberty University. Pierre’s time with the Flames is where he first crossed paths with Getter.
The Flames went 177-58 during the seven seasons Pierre was on the bench. They won six regular-season conference titles and four conference tournament championships. The Flames featured a defense that ranked in the top 31 nationally in scoring defense in each of Pierre's final five seasons. His final season, the 2024-25 campaign, saw the Flames possess the No. 11 defense in Division I.
In 2019, Liberty defeated Mississippi State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Flames made three consecutive March Madness appearances to start Pierre’s tenure, and then followed that with an NIT berth in 2023. The 177 victories for the Flames in Pierre’s time in Lynchburg, Va., rank as the sixth most in the country over the seven-year span.
Pierre began his tenure with Liberty in 2018 as the Director of Player Development. He was elevated to assistant coach in 2020. His primary roles included coordinating the program's defense and recruiting efforts.
Before Liberty, Pierre served as the Graduate Assistant/Video Coordinator for Middle Tennessee. During his two years with the Blue Raiders, MTSU went 56-13 and reached the postseason twice. In 2017, the Blue Raiders advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after defeating Minnesota. MTSU reached the second round of the NIT in 2018.
Pierre spent the 2016 season at Pawnee HS in Oklahoma as a middle school social studies teacher and assistant high school basketball coach under six-time state champion coach David Page. The 2016 squad started 28-0 before falling in the state semifinal game. Pierre also spent the same season serving as head coach of the eighth-grade team at Stillwater Junior High School.
During his undergraduate studies, Pierre served as a student manager from 2011-15 at Oklahoma State. During his four seasons with the Cowboys, OSU won 78 games and made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. He earned his B.S. in Secondary Education from Oklahoma State in 2015, and his M. Ed. In Higher Education Administration from Middle Tennessee State in 2018.
Pierre is the son of a basketball coach. His father, Butch Pierre, was the Associate Head Coach at OSU during Pierre’s undergraduate years. Butch has more than three decades of coaching experience at LSU (Final Four 2006), Oklahoma State, N.C. State, Charlotte, Memphis, UTEP, and Wichita State.
Pierre and his wife, Caroline, have two children: son Joseph Pierre IV and daughter Annelise.
