For the most part, the Lancers battled the Cougars to the end, keeping last year's NAIA runner-up on their heels until a breakaway goal in the 87th minute put the game away. The Cougars, who are one of the GSAC's top scoring teams, outshot the Lancers by a slim 13-11 advantage.
Brandon Stirm put the Cougars on the board first when he beat CBU keeper Casey Pradmore in the 40th minute. Sven Simon took a ball from Donny Dequine and split a pair of defenders by playing a perfectly placed ball down the middle to a cutting Stirm, who took a touch and beat Pradmore to the far post.

Still refusing to go away, the Lancers, who outshot the Cougars, 9-6, in the second half, cut the deficit in half in the 85th minute. The Cougars attempted to clear a CBU corner kick, but it went right to Jose Solis on the right side. Solis sent the ball back into the box where Spenser Steele headed home his first goal of the year to make it 2-1.
