RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Although she came into Friday's game with a goal to her credit already, Joanna Idom broke out with a 3-goal effort to sign, seal, and deliver a, 3-0, California Baptist win over Cal Poly Pomona.
Idom had been frustrated in the season-opener before breaking through, and fired away 7 shots in the Lancers' win over Dominican last Saturday with no result. It took her nearly 52 minutes into the this afternoon's game to get comfortable, but the redshirt freshman certainly looked at ease with 3 second-half goals.
"Joanna came up big for us tonight," said California Baptist co-head coach Wilt Kishimoto. "All of her shots and attempts had been falling short in the last few days, but she finally found the net and got into a rhythm."
The Lancers (3-0) were out-shot, 9-8, in the contest, but All-GSAC goalkeeper Heather Andrews came up with 5 saves to stop the Broncos, who fall to 2-1 with the loss.
After a scoreless 51 minutes, Sarai Stamper found Idom on a square pass from near the sideline, and Idom chopped her way around a defender and knocked in a left-footed goal to give the Lancers all the advantage they would need.
California Baptist, which was also out-fouled, 16-12, stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 89th minute, when Stamper picked up Monica Lydon's corner kick and fired away towards the goal. The ball caromed off a defender and right to Idom, who promptly made the score 2-0 with a sharp one-timer.
Less than 30 seconds later, in the 90th minute, Idom was again set up with a nifty pass from Stamper, and she ripped home her third goal of the game to make the final score 3-0.
"I think our fitness really showed in this game," said Kishimoto. "In the last 10 minutes, were able to exploit some weak spots in Cal Poly, and then we were able to finally put them away. Cal Poly played really strong, they're a big and physical team, so it came down to our team's fitness. Our girls have worked hard in the preseason, and we're happy with where they are in their overall endurance."
