The win is the Lancers' third in a row as they improve to 7-1 overall, 1-0 GSAC, picking up 3 key points. Vanguard suffers its first defeat and falls to
Today's win is all the more crucial, because coupled with No. 9 Westmont's loss to Concordia on Monday, it might be just enough to propel the Lancers into the NAIA's Top 10 for the first time in 2 years.
In a battle between 2 of the GSAC's top defensive teams statistically, the Lions outshot the Lancers, 14-5. However, none of the 14 shots were overly threatening, and the ones that were All-GSAC keeper Heather Andrews was there to snuff them. Andrews made 5 saves.
“The door was open for us to make a statement,” said CBU co-head coach
After a scoreless first half in which the Lancers were able to get just one shot, they wasted little time getting on the board, needing just 2:51 to get on the board. Joanna Idom promptly served a perfectly placed corner kick to a waiting Jacalyn van den Raadt, who touched the ball toward the frame. Stamper was placed right in front of Lion keeper Marissa Swift, and she gently flicked the ball past a shielded Swift and into the net.
The rest was left up to a stellar defense, which left its own mark on this one as they routinely kept high-scoring Vanguard forwards Rachel Housepian and Heather Hutton off the board.
“We've been working on staying compact defensively, and they have a pair of big-time forwards,” said Bowers. “The first key to defense is pressure and we pressured them all day.”
Stamper, who collected a pair of All-GSAC honors as a freshman and sophomore and is coming off a one-goal junior campaign, continues to rise to the occasion. It is her second straight game with a goal.
