Going into the GSAC game at the NAIA's No. 16-ranked Azusa Pacific carrying a 3-game winning streak, the Lancers led 76-68 with 6:02 separating them from their fourth consecutive win?a win that would have tied them for sixth in the conference.
However, the Lancers were unable to sink a field goal in the game's final 6:02, as they watched the Cougars' Monica Somers score 10 points, force a steal and dish out a turnover in a 15-2 run to come back and win by a final score of 83-78.
The loss drops the Lancers to 11-7, 3-6, while the Cougars improve to 14-4, 6-3.
Somers finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds while Abby Johnson scored 21 points, hauled off 15 rebounds and notched 4 blocks in the win. Meliame Hala'ufia scored 16 points and grabbed 11 boards for Azusa Pacific.
The Cougars outrebounded the Lancers by a 60-38 margin, including 25-12 on the offensive side.
After shooting 47.2 percent (17-for-36) in the first half, the Lancers shot just 28.9 percent (11-for-38), as Jessica Fisiikava and Brandie McCann each scored 15 points in the loss.
Megan Bradford and Nicole Davis scored 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Lancers led by 10, at 31-21, after Bradford nailed down a 3-pointer on an assist from McCann with 9:20 left in the half, but Azusa Pacific would pull within one, at 35-34 on a pair of Meliame Hala'ufia free-throws at 4:34 that capped off a 7-2 run.
California Baptist shot 47.2 percent (17-for-36) to the Cougars' 35.7 percent (15-for-42) in the opening half heading into the locker room.
