RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? California Baptist got a much needed layoff this week after playing the most games in the country to start the season. The Lancers (21-11) picked back up Saturday and never missed a beat with a 14-6 win over Chapman (10-12) at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
Ryan Steiger scored four goals tying Ante Kunac for the most goals score in school history with 190. Aaron Steiger, Scott Gleason and Chris Morgan all scored a pair of goals while Jason Bills, David Graves and Alan Ogden all scored single goals as well. Jon Miller recorded 10 saves in the first three quarters and Zach Bowman picked up six in the fourth quarter alone.
“If I would have known he was just one goal away I would probably have called timeout and got him in there,” said CBU head coach Rick Rowland. “That's ok though because he will get that goal next week.”
Graves also recorded a game high three assists while Ogden recorded a game high three steals. CBU was close to perfect on 6-on-5 opportunities scoring on five of the seven chances it had the advantage.
The Lancers never trailed and the Panthers tied the game twice at one and three before CBU began to separate itself. Ryan Steiger started a 3-0 run with a five-meter goal to give the Lancers a 4-3 before Gleason scored with 58 seconds left in the half and Morgan added a five-meter goal with 20 seconds as CBU took a 6-3 lead at the half.
Cal Baptist put the game away in the third quarter by out scoring the Panthers 7-1 and put it in cruse control from there.
“Every team will come out and play with you for the first half and maybe into the third quarter, but I think we were a little more fit and came out and did what we were supposed to do,” said Rowland. “They are a good team and have some good players, but they got into some foul trouble and we took advantage of that. The difference was our outlet passes in the second half. We made bad choices in the first half, but we improved in that area in the third quarter.”
CBU now gets said for a cross-town game with Riverside Community College Friday at 3 p.m.
