RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Kasey Weaver did all that she could for California Baptist Saturday, but the Lancers fell to a pair of ranked teams at the Lancer Invitational.
Weaver not only finished with 28 saves, but added an assist and a goal on the day. The Lancers dropped morning contest, 9-8, to No. 12 UC Santa Barbara, and lost, 9-6, to No. 8 UC Irvine in the afternoon matchup.
California Baptist starts the season with a record of 0-2.
"We've never started a season with games against a pair of the top-15 teams," said California Baptist head coach Rick Rowland. "We learned a lot today in each game. It's good to see the new girls mixing in with our veterans. We were within a couple of goals late in each game, and I'm proud to see that."
With her team down, 8-5, in the fourth quarter against UCI, Weaver caught Anteater goalie Lauren Machanis too far out of her goal mouth and made her pay, with a long-range shot that made the score 8-6 with 3:48 remaining. From there, Machanis kept the Lancers off the scoreboard while her offense picked up an insurance goal to win, 9-6.
In the third quarter, Weaver stopped a 5-meter opportunity and found a streaking Corrie Stuursma, who tucked away a goal to make the deficit 4-6 heading into the final quarter.
"Kasey kept us in the game today," said Rowland. "Any time you have a goalie make the kind of saves she did, get your offense going and even score, you're going to at least stay in games."
