RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Khadijah Greenwood scored the game's only goal to lift Cal State L.A. to a 1-0 non-conference win Saturday over California Baptist in the Lancers' home opener.
The loss is the Lancers' first of the season as they fall to 2-1. The Golden Eagles remain unblemished and move to 3-0.
Battling through temperatures that exceeded 100 degrees for most of the contest, the teams went into the intermission scoreless after an evenly-played 45 minutes. With overtime looming just 12 minutes away, the speedy Greenwood broke loose down the left flank in the 78th minute. Ana Valverde controlled the ball in the middle of the field and played a streaking Greenwood into the left side of the box. Greenwood hammered home her fourth goal of the year past a helpless Emily Evanson.
The Lancers out-shot the Golden Eagles, 18-13, and pushed forward for the equalizer in the final 10 minutes but to no avail. CBU had several quality chances and nearly struck first in the tenth minute when Jacqueline Witz banged one off the post. Just 54 seconds after the Cal State L.A. goal, Witz had another golden opportunity, but her game-tying effort just skimmed over the crossbar.
In the 76th minute, just prior to the game-winner, Lizzy Bendrick found herself on the right side of the box with a one-on-one opportunity, but Cal State L.A. keeper Reyna Coca made a nice save to keep the game deadlocked.
Evanson stood on her head for the entire game, collecting a career-high nine saves, going airborne for a handful of them. In fact, her nine saves are the most by a Lancer keeper since Heather Andrews made 13 in a 4-0 loss to Southern Utah back on Sept. 12, 2005.
