IRVINE, Calif. ? The rivalry is already there on the basketball court, the soccer field and the diamond, but the California Baptist-Concordia rivalry has now entered the pool. The Lancers (8-6) took the first ever men's water polo meeting with the Eagles (4-5) 10-7, but the Eagles surprised No. 18 CBU.
“I think that it's great that more and more schools in the NAIA are adding water polo,” said CBU head coach Rick Rowland. “Concordia was very emotional with it being their first home game. They are a legit team. They have some very talented guys in the pool.”
The Lancers used a 5-0 third quarter and got behind senior keeper Jon Miller to pull off the win. Miller recorded 16 saves and stopped a penalty shot in the third quarter. It was the third straight game that Miller recorded double-digit saves.
Ryan Steiger led the Lancers offensively scoring three goals and recording an assist. He also notched three steals and drew one ejection. Josh Harris also scored three goals while Aaron Steiger scored a pair of goals as well. Alan Ogden and Chris Morgan also had a goal each.
CBU trailed 6-4 at the half, but scored six straight goals and outscored CU 6-1 in the second half. Aaron Steiger opened the third quarter with back-to-back goals to tie the game at six and then Ryan Steiger gave CBU the lead and added another insurance goal to give the Lancers an 8-6 lead. Morgan and Harris added the final two goals.
The Lancers return home Friday and Saturday to host the Lancer Invitational.
