RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? It was anything but pretty, but California Baptist pulled off a pair of wins against NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino, Monday, at John C. Funk Stadium.
Sara Goforth and Chantal Millard scored the first two runs of the day for the Lancers (9-1) and Courtney Weber and Sarah Hurlbut scored the final two runs to beat the Coyotes (4-7-1) 2-1 and 3-2 (8 inn.).
“This was not prototypical California Baptist softball today,” said CBU head coach Mike Smith. “We just didn't swing the bats very well today. You have to tip your hat to their pitching. They came in with a game plan and tried to mix it up. We weren't very disciplined at the plate today, but we were fortunate to get great pitching again.”
In the opener Millard and Goforth combined for the only hits for CBU with Millard going 2-for-3, with an RBI, and Goforth going 1-for-3.
The Coyotes opened the game with a run in the top of the first, but the Lancers answered when Goforth scored on Millard's triple down the right-field line. Millard then scored on an Erin Moore sacrifice-fly to left.
From there CBU turned it over to Amy Thomas (5-1) who went the distance throwing all seven innings allowing just three hits and no earned runs. She also fanned seven batters.
Thomas also picked up the win in the second game after she came in relief in the fifth inning for Melanie Ahumada. Ahumada threw 5.1 innings before handing the reins over to Thomas who threw the final 2.2.
CBU took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Kelly Maconachy scored on a Millard single to right field.
CSUSB answered in the top of the sixth when Nicole Camarena led off the inning with a solo home run to left field. The Coyotes took the lead in the top of the eighth, after no one score in the seventh forcing extra innings, when Valerie Calderon drove in a run with a single to right field.
CBU answered with the game-tying and winning run on its first at bat of the inning. After Weber was placed on second to start the eighth (international tiebreaker), Hurbut attempted a sac-bunt. The Coyotes' pitcher, Debbie Shisler, overthrew third trying to get Weber and the throw bounced into foul territory in left field allowing Weber to score to tie the game. Hurlbut, who was running the whole time, rounded third and beat the throw at the plate to give the Lancers the win.
“We went through some adversity today,” said Smith. “It's nice to see some emotion. That showed me some true character about our team. We didn't panic. We were resilient each and every inning.”
CBU will now get set to host Belhaven in a doubleheader, Saturday at noon.
