CBU’s Season Ends in the Los Angeles Regional

LOS ANGELES, CA --- The first elimination game of the Los Angeles regional pitted two future conference foes against one another, as California Baptist took on Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. In a low scoring affair, the best season of CBU's Division I era ended with a 3-2 walk off loss.
CBU ends the year, the winningest season in the program's DI era, 43-19 overall.
The Lancers earned their spot in the Los Angeles Regional after earning the WAC's automatic bid as conference tournament champions. CBU also won the WAC regular season title, the first conference championship since 2017 when the Lancers competed in the PacWest Conference and NCAA Division II.
Sydney Peterson provided the offense for the Lancers, a two run blast in the top of the second that countered a Fullerton run in the bottom of the first.
Peterson's home run was her third of the season, with all three coming in postseason action. Peterson hit a solo shot in Friday night's loss to UCLA, the final run of a ten run fifth inning. She also hit a home run in the WAC Tournament last week in Stephenville.
CBU held the one-run advantage until the bottom of the fifth when Fullerton leveled the score. The tie game held into the seventh, as the Lancers looked to retake the lead and secure a win. Peterson got the line moving with a one out walk, and looking for a spark, head coach Brandon Telesco turned to his bench. With two outs, Bella Wellbaum looked to have hit a pinch hit single to put the go-ahead runner in scoring position, but she was called out for being out of the box, ending the inning.
Fullerton responded with two hits in the bottom half, including a walk off single, to end the game.
Right-hander Miranda De Nava tossed her 17th complete game of the season in her final outing. She allowed three runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.
Saturday brings to an end the collegiate careers of four seniors: Ashlee Annett, Emily Darwin, Makayla Medellin, and Malachy Russell-Millen.
The Lancers, the final champions of the WAC, will transition to the Big West Conference next season.
