STEPHENVILLE, TX --- The Lancers have punched their ticket to the NCAA Softball Tournament, as CBU came out victorious in the winner-take-all WAC Championship Game on Saturday. After beginning the day with a 6-4 loss, CBU bounced back in the finale of the WAC Tournament to beat Tarleton State, 8-2, and claim the WAC Championship.
California Baptist are champions of both the regular season and conference tournament, giving the university nine WAC Championships this year.
The Lancers needed to win one game on Saturday to clinch the first conference tournament championship in the program's Division I history. They got off to a good start in game one, plating two runs in the top of the first thanks to an Ashlee Annett single. But the lead was short-lived as Tarleton struck for five in the bottom half, four of which scored on a grand slam.
Malachy Russell-Millen chipped away at the deficit with an RBI single in the second, but the Texans got the run back with a solo shot in the third. Makayla Medellin added an RBI single in the fifth for CBU's final run of the game.
Madalyn Martin was credited with the loss after allowing three run across a third of an inning. Emily Darwin did the bulk of the work in the circle, allowing one run on three hits across 5.2 innings of work.
The loss set up the 11th and final game of the WAC Tournament, a winner-take-all championship game to decide who would earn the WAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Head coach Brandon Telesco turned to Miranda De Nava for the final WAC game of the season. De Nava, the WAC Pitcher of the Year, did not disappoint as she logged her 16th complete game and picked up her 19th victory.
De Nava allowed two runs across only two hits.
Medellin put the Lancers on the board in the first inning when she hit her 15th home run of the season, and third of the postseason. The two-run blast was followed by an RBI single from Victoria Macias to push CBU's lead to three. The Lancers struck for five more in the third, starting with Annett and Sydney Peterson with RBI singles. The big hit came with the bases loaded when Kimberly Westover came off the bench to clear the bases with a triple.
Annett, De Nava, Peterson, and Kenzie Farrier-Pilon were named to the All-Tournament Team. Medellin was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Medellin finished the conference tournament 6-for-11 with two home runs, six RBI, and seven runs scored. Farrier-Pilon led the Lancers with eight hits. Annett finished 7-for-11 at the dish with seven RBI.
Saturday's conference championship clinches CBU the WAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Lancers will find out their destination on Saturday when the NCAA reveals the 2026 bracket during the selection show at 4 p.m. (PST). A watch party for the selection show will be held in the lobby of the Fowler Events Center.
