The Lancers will play for their season on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at UCLA's Easton Stadium. Awaiting CBU is Cal State Fullerton, which allowed a late-inning comeback to South Carolina on Friday.
UCLA's Jordan Woolery provided the first strike of the night, a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. But the Lancers had a counterpunch in the top of the second as junior Victoria Macias launched a solo shot over the center field wall to cut the deficit in half.
The Bruins struck again in the third, starting with a three-run shot from Aleena Garcia, followed by a Soo-Jin Berry solo blast to make it a 7-1 game.
What came next was arguably the best offensive inning of the season for the Lancers. In the top of the fifth, CBU struck for ten runs on six hits to take an 11-7 lead. The rally began when Malachy Russell-Millen walked with the bases loaded. Head coach Brandon Telesco then called on Kimberly Westover to pinch hit. Westover, for the second game in a row, answered the call as she scorched a ball to third base for an RBI single.
Kenzie Farrier-Pilon continued the rally with an infield single, and then a throwing error allowed Russell-Millen to score and keep the bases loaded. Ashlee Annett then had her moment, a bases-clearing double to give the Lancers the lead. Next came Macias, the offensive star of the night, as she hit her second home run of the evening to push CBU's lead to four.
Macias later added a double as she finished 3-for-4 with three RBI.
UCLA started to fight back in the bottom of the fifth as they loaded the bases, but Emily Darwin got out of the jam with no runs allowed. But the Bruins would not go away, as in the sixth, they pushed across two to cut CBU's lead in half. UCLA then leveled the game in the seventh with Jolyna Lamar's two-run home run. A single and back-to-back walks would load the base, setting up for a walk-off sac fly.
Darwin was handed the loss after 3.2 innings in relief. Miranda De Nava started Friday's game and lasted three innings.
CBU and Cal State Fullerton will battle on Saturday to see who continues their season. The winner will then play the loser of Saturday's first game between UCLA and South Carolina.
