BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? After dropping the opening game of the Roadrunner Invitational, California Baptist ripped off three straight wins for the first time this season. The Lancers (7-5) lost a heartbreaker to host Cal State Bakersfield (10-9) before downing Cal Lutheran (10-7), UC Santa Cruz (13-11) and Cal State East Bay (13-9).
In the opener, CBU jumped out early scoring four goals in the first quarter to take a 4-1 lead. CBU added three more to take a 7-4 halftime lead. Whatever momentum the Lancers had in the first half seemed to disappear in the second half as the Roadrunners outscored CBU 3-1 in each of the final two quarters. Corrie Stuursma and Whitney Shaw each scored a pair of goals while Cydney Owen, Kylie Chevalier and Ashleigh Wheeler each scored single goals.
Against Cal Lutheran, the Lancers got behind Stuursma's four goals to keep the Kingsmen at bay. CBU opened the game with another strong quarter scoring five goals. Despite getting outscored 4-2 in the second quarter the Lancers carried a 7-6 lead into the second half. California Baptist added two more goals in the third and another in the fourth while holding CLU to just one second-half goal.
Chelsea Gentry and Wheeler both scored two goals while Shaw and Collette Brown each scored a solo goal.
CBU closed the tournament out Sunday with wins over the Banana Slugs and Pioneers.
Against UC Santa Cruz, Gentry and Julie Snodgrass each scored a goal in the first quarter, but the Lancers trailed 3-2. Shaw tied the game at three with a goal in the first few minutes of the second quarter before Gentry and Snodgrass each scored their second goal to give CBU a 5-3 lead. After a UCSC goal pulled the Slugs within one Stuursma capped off a 4-1 run to give the Lancers a 6-4 lead at the half.
The Lancers scored five goals in the third quarter to increase its lead to 11-8. Stuursma scored two of her three goals in the third quarter alone. CBU was able to hold off the Slugs in the fourth to take the win.
CBU had no problems with the East Bay as Owen led the way with four goals. The Lancers led 5-3 at the half and outscored the Pioneers 8-6 in the second half to win their third straight.
The Lancers will now get set to host Cal State San Bernardino, Thursday, at 3 p.m.
