
SHAW'S TIME TO SHINE

RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Whitney Shaw scored a hat trick in the fourth quarter alone to lift California Baptist to a 9-7 win over Cal State San Bernardino. The Lancers (8-5) ripped off their fourth straight win with the late game rally over the Coyotes (3-3).
Shaw broke a 6-6 tie with 6:28 left in the fourth with then added another goal at the 4:42 mark and sealed the game with a goal with eight seconds left.
The senior from Yorba Linda, scored five goals on the day. She notched the first goal of the game for CBU in the opening minutes of the first quarter and then added a goal in the third before the fourth-quarter hat trick.
Corrie Stuursma and Ashleigh Wheeler scored a pair of goals each. Stuursma scored both of hers in the third while Wheeler scored one each in the first and second quarters. Julie Abendschein recorded eight saves.
The game featured five ties, but the Lancers battled the better part of the first half and third quarter from behind. CSUSB took a 1-0 lead before Shaw tied it at 1-1. The Coyotes jumped up 2-1 with 5:13 left in the first before Wheeler tied it just 50 seconds before the end of the quarter.
The Coyotes got back-to-back goals to take a 4-2 lead, but Wheeler made it a one-goal game at the half.
Shaw tied the game at four to open the second half, but the Coyotes answered again with 4:31 left in the third taking a 5-4 lead. Stuursma gave the Lancers their first lead, at 6-5 with consecutive goals less than a minute a part before San Bernardino tied the game at 6-6 with 12 seconds left in the third.
That set the stage for Shaw's fourth-quarter performance. The Coyotes could only come up with a single goal in the final quarter.
CBU will now take on Claremont Mudd-Scripps, Wednesday, at 5 p.m. in Pomona, Calif.
