
CHAPS UPSET CBU

TUCSON, Ariz. ? Just hours after California Baptist was named the new No. 1 in the latest top 25 poll, it fell 5-3 to No. 3 Lubbock Christian.
The Lancers (33-3) opened the day winning 11-0 over Hastings (Neb.) and 9-0 over Dordt (Iowa) before falling at the hands of the Lady Chaparrals.
Amy Thomas (18-2) picked up the win in the opener against Hastings while Nikki Lowe hit her second home run of the season with a grand slam in the fourth. CBU exploded in the fourth scoring seven runs after it scored four in the bottom of the first. Erin Moore, Nicole Shoemaker and Caty Reeves all had home runs as well.
In the win over Dordt, Shoemaker hit her fourth home run of the season while doing 3-for-3 with five RBIs. Lowe also went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Melanie Ahumada (15-1) picked up the win going the complete five innings and striking out five.
In the final game of the night, Lubbock jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the Chaparrals ripped four straight hits. Those were the only hits Thomas allowed in the entire game.
CBU answered in the fourth and fifth innings scoring two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Shoemaker scored the first run of the game for the Lancers on Sarah Hurlbut double and then Karina Slauenwhite scored on an Allison Dennis sac fly making it 3-2. Sara Goforth tied the contest when she scored on a Chantal Millard sac fly.
LCU scored two more in the bottom of the sixth on a CBU error and a pair of fielder's choices to steal the win.
The Lancers will now head back home where they will host Columbia (Mo.), Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
