RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? A little fourth quarter magic from senior Cydney Owen gave California Baptist a 9-5 win over Harvard.
Owen ripped a natural hat trick in the fourth quarter scoring goals at 6:03, 5:09 and 2:49 in the final period of play. The Lancers (20-7) also got a hat trick from Chelsea Gentry and got solo goals from Corrie Stuursma, Whitney Shaw and Collette Brown.
"We played a very solid game against an aggressive and physical opponent," said CBU head coach Jacob Medina. "We have been working on our transition game this past week and it really showed today. We had a total team commitment to intense defense and aggressive counter attacks. I was very pleased with our overall team effort. We had great defensive play from Jennifer (Binggeli) and solid defense from both Cydney and Chelsea."
Gentry opened the fourth when she scored with 6:41 left before Owen scored three straight to put it away at 9-4.
The Lancers opened the game on a 3-0 run on goals by Brown, Shaw and Gentry. The Crimson made it 3-1 just before the end of the half and got within one at 3-2 less than a minute into the third quarter. The Lancers answered with goals by Gentry and Stuursma to take a 5-2 lead. The Crimson closed the third out with back-to-back goals making it 5-4.
Julie Abendschein and Kayla Lind combined for six saves as each notched three.
California Baptist will now travel to Tempe, Ariz., to play in the ASU Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
