TEMPE, Ariz. ? At the end of the first day of the ASU Invitational, California Baptist stood on each end of a one-goal spectrum falling 7-6 to No. 19 UC San Diego before winning 10-9 over Pacific.
The Lancers (21-8) just missed edging the Tritons, but a third-quarter stumble cost CBU its first upset over a top 20 team this year.
CBU led 5-4 at the half, but UCSD outscored the Lancers 3-1 in the third quarter and neither team scored in the fourth. Cydney Owen and Corrie Stuursma each scored a pair of goals while Chelsea Gentry and Collette Brown each scored solo goals.
Whitney Shaw dished out three assists and picked up five steals while Julie Snodgrass notched six steals. Gentry also drew four ejections while Julie Abendschein notched four saves in the loss.
“We dominated the first half of play,” said CBU head coach Jacob Medina. “We were getting good looks and our defense was playing well, but we just shut down in the second half. We just didn't do anything to help ourselves.”
In the nightcap against the Tigers, CBU looked to have shaken off the tough loss to UCSD after it opened the first quarter with a 3-0 lead. Pacific answered though in the second by ripping five goals and closed it to a 6-5 gap at the half. The Lancers answered in the third outscoring UOP 2-1 in the third to take an 8-6 lead heading into the fourth. The Tigers rallied with three goals in the fourth, but CBU scored a pair of goals to grab the victory.
Stuursma led the way with a hat trick while Gentry and Shaw each scored a pair of goals. Julie Snodgrass, Ashleigh Wheeler and Kylie Chevalier each scored single goals. Shaw also dished out two assists. Abendschein also notched five saves.
CBU will cap the ASU Invitational with a game against the host No. 7 Arizona State, Sunday at 10:20 a.m.
