RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? California Baptist may not have opened the day well, but it definitely closed it at home with a smile. The Lancers (23-11) dropped an 11-7 decision at Cal State San Bernardino early in the day before grabbing an 8-6 win over Pacific.
The Coyotes (16-14) got five goals from All-American Freyja Berg and outscored CBU 5-1 in the second half after both teams were knotted at six at the half.
The Lancers trailed 3-0 in the first few minutes of the game before Collette Brown put CBU on the board. Julie Snodgrass made it 4-2 with 2:54 left in the first, but CSUSB answered again to make it 5-2. Cydney Owen made it 5-3 before Chelsea Gentry scored a goal at the buzzer to pull CBU within one, at 5-4, at the end of the first.
Gentry then opened the second with a game-tying goal just 20 seconds in before Corrie Stuursma gave the Lancers their first lead at 6-5. That was the only lead CBU had as the Coyotes tied the game at six just before the half.
After San Bernardino took a 7-6 lead midway through the third, Brown scored the final goal for the Lancers with 3:28 left in the quarter to tie the game at seven.
Berg gave CSUSB the lead for good with 3:03 left in the third as she sparked a 4-0 run, including a 3-0 shutout in the fourth, to give the Coyotes the win.
CBU rebounded against the Tigers (4-23) as the Lancers got a hat trick from Gentry and never trailed in the final home regular-season contest of the year.
Both teams shared a pair of ties at 1-1 and 2-2 as Stuursma and Gentry each netted a goal in the first quarter. Whitney Shaw broke the tie early in the second and Gentry made it 4-2 with her second goal of the game before Stuursma put CBU up 5-3 midway through the second quarter.
A late five-meter goal by the Tigers made it 5-4 at the half, and then Pacific tied the game at five on a goal by Jessica Safir. CBU answered with back-to-back goals from Snodgrass and Owen before Gentry put the finishing touches on the game with a goal with 3:32 left.
The Lancers will head to UC San Diego, Thursday, for a 7 p.m. game before hosting the inaugural Women's Water Polo Invitational April 18-19.
