RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Laura Condon played the irresistible force for Pomona Pitzer as she scored five goals in a 10-9 overtime thrilling win against California Baptist.
The Lancers (21-10) and Sagehens (8-9) tied nine times and exchanged five leads before deciding a winner.
Despite losing a heartbreaking game, a bright spot was the fact that Whitney Shaw was able to pass Holly Curran (2001-2004) as CBU's all-time leader in assists. Shaw was able to dish out one assist to go with her two goals giving her 127 career assists.
Corrie Stuursma along with Ashleigh Wheeler scored a pair of goals while Kylie Chevalier, Cydney Owen and Chelsea Gentry each netted one goal. Stuursma dished out three assists while Owen recorded four steals. Stuursma and Wheeler also recorded a pair of steals. Julie Abendschein notched eight saves in the loss.
Stuursma opened the game with a goal in less than a minute, but Condon scored back-to-back goals to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead. Chevalier tied the game at two before Shaw gave the Lancers a 3-2 lead at the end of the first.
Pomona answered back ripping consecutive goals to open the second quarter, but Stuursma's goal tied the game at four just before the half. Owen opened the second half with a goal that put CBU up 5-4, but once again Condon answered for the Sagehens to tie it at five to end the third.
Shaw put CBU back up at 6-5 with 3:26 left, but Condon answered just 13 seconds later to tie the game at six. Wheeler gave the Lancers their last lead when she was able to muscle her way through the Pomona defense to put CBU up 7-6, but a Janelle Gyorffy goal with 2:21 left knotted the contest at seven.
Tamara Perea looked to have slammed the door shut on California Baptist when she scored with 2:08 left to play giving Pomona an 8-7 lead, but a Chelsea Gentry goal with 21 seconds left forced overtime.
All three goals scored in OT came in the second overtime period. Condon put Pomona up 9-8 with 2:16 left, but Wheeler answered just 20 seconds later to tie it at nine. It was again Perea who gave the Sagehens a lead in the final minutes, but this time it was game-winner as she scored with 53 seconds left. CBU had a couple of looks at the goal in the final seconds, but a big save by Elena Peifer saved the game for the Sagehens.
“We just simply got out played,” said CBU head coach Jacob Medina. “We had very little game awareness and we just got out hustled to everything. At this point in the year we have to be more on top of our game and be sharper than what we were today.”
The loss is the first in school history to Pomona and also breaks an 11 game home winning streak for the Lancers.
