RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? It took a last-second backhanded goal and a break away goal in the final two minutes for California Baptist as it escaped an upset with a 10-9 win over Concordia.
The Lancers (22-10) trailed 9-8 with 1:23 left to play when Chelsea Gentry flipped a backhanded goal past The Eagles' (4-12) Kaitlyn Miller with three seconds left on the shot clock to tie the game at nine. Then Whitney Shaw broke away from the pack after a defensive stop and converted on a one-on-one with Miller to put the game away with 32 seconds left. A late foul by Concordia sealed it as the Lancers breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Four Lancers all tossed in a pair of goals as Julie Snodgrass and Collette Brown did their damage in the first half with single goals each in the first and second quarters. Gentry scored one in the second quarter before her final game-tying goal. Shaw scored both of her goals in the final quarter.
Corrie Stuursma and Ashleigh Wheeler each scored solo goals in the third. Julie Abendschein notched seven saves in the win. Jennifer Binggeli and Gentry each dished out a pair of assists.
The Lancers looked to be pulling away after a 4-1 run put them up 5-2 in the second quarter, but a goal with 54 second left in the half by the Eagles made it 5-3 at the half.
Stuursma put the Lancers up 6-3 early in the third, but Concordia answered with three straight goals to tie it at six with 3:32 left in the quarter. Wheeler broke the tie with 3:09 left in the third, but the Eagles again got a goal in the final minute of the quarter to tie it at seven.
Shaw put CBU up 8-7, before back-to-back goals from Tuesday Schellinger gave the Eagles their first lead of the game, at 9-8, with 1:56 left in the fourth. That's when Gentry and Shaw took control and stole the game away from Concordia.
California Baptist now has just one home game left as they take on Pacific, Saturday, at 3 p.m. CBU will head to Cal State San Bernardino for an 11 a.m. game before they take on Pacific at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
