RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- If the NAIA's No. 1-ranked California Baptist University had any ill effects from Wednesday, they were quickly disposed of Saturday.
The Lancers, who lost both their first game of the season and their top two scorers (Kylee Nicassio and Eva Solis) Wednesday at Vanguard, bounced right back with an impressive 3-0 win over Fresno Pacific.
CBU improves to 11-1-1 overall, 4-1-0 (12 points) GSAC, while the Sunbirds drop to 7-3-0, 2-2-0 (6 points).
“We just went back to work, business as usual today,” said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. “It was a complete performance, and we got contributions from everyone.”
Jacquelyn Witz, who last scored on Aug. 18 when she had a hat trick at Cal State L.A. in the season opener, scored twice today, once in each half.
The Lancers went right to work and came through in the 11th minute when Amanda Lammers put away her second goal of the season. Jenna Oltmanns played a long ball into the box. FPU keeper Catherine Michaelis charged out, but the ball slipped through her fingers. Lammers ran onto the ball and placed it into the wide open net.
Not to be out-done, Witz gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead when she collected a loose ball off a blocked shot from Joanna Idom and put away her fourth goal of the season in the 39th minute.
CBU carried the two-goal advantage into the locker room and then absorbed a spirited effort from the Sunbirds early in the second half. However, the Lancers weathered the storm and then put the game away when Witz took a ball from Idom down the right side and ripped a shot from 18 yards out to the far post to complete the scoring. Idom finished with two assists.
For Witz, it was the 25th and 26th goals of her career, moving her past former teammate Lindsey Merrett and into an eighth place tie with Lisa Muench (1998-2001) on the Lancers' career goal scoring list.
“Jacquelyn gave us a solid performance today,” said St. Clair. “With Kylee and Eva out, we're going to need more production from other people, and today it was Jacquelyn. We need people to step up, and everyone has been willing to put in the work.”
Emily Evanson and the Lancer defense also put together their 10th shutout of the season, tying the school-record which was set in 2003. Evanson needed to make just three saves for her 21st career clean sheet.
