SANTA CLARA, Calif. ? California Baptist University missed a golden opportunity to knock off a team that had received votes in the top 20 poll. The Lancers (5-6) however, were beat on a goal with 36 seconds left as they fell 10-9 to Santa Clara.
CBU led 2-1 after the first quarter of play and led 4-2 late in the second before the Broncos answered at the buzzer to make it 4-3 at the half.
Santa Clara took the lead, at 5-4, with two early goals in the third quarter and it was back and forth the rest of the contest. The score was tied at 9-9 before the Broncos got the goal with 36 seconds left to grab the win.
Jennifer Grutz, Chelsea Gentry and Tiffany Strickland all scored a pair of goals while Ashleigh Rood, Melissa Shepardson and Collette Brown all scored single goals. Brown and Kylie Chevalier each dished out a pair of assists while Gentry and Strickland each recorded one. Rood also notched a pair of steals while Brown and Riley Scheid had one.
Camryn Rogers also picked up eight saves.
The Lancers converted on five of their eight 6-on-5 attempts while the Mustangs were 3-for-4.
