RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Throwing a perfect game in high school is one thing, but to throw a perfect game in just your second collegiate game of your career is another. Emma Holden, a freshman from San Carlos, Calif., tossed a perfect game in an 8-0 win over Simpson, before the Lancers (8-0) downed College of Idaho, 4-1 in the Ringor SoCal Smash.
Holden (2-0) threw the complete six innings, striking out nine. Her perfect game comes on the heels of a near perfect game by Kendall Gorham who was just one hit batsmen away from a perfect game the day before. The Lancers also had a combined no-hitter against Indiana Tech in the season-opener.
“Emma threw an unbelievable ball game,” said CBU head coach Mike Smith. “Her parents flew down here this morning just to see the game. I am just so excited for her and her family. She moves the ball around so well. She has a great up pitch and a great down pitch that she can mix in with her curve and back door slider. She can also throw a great changeup and change the level of the pitch and keep hitters guessing.”
Ashley Boyd followed up a 6-for-8 performance she had Friday with a 4-for-7 night that included two home runs in the win over Simpson.
“Anytime that you can get a leadoff hitter like that to come in and start your offense, that's a huge catalyst,” said Smith. “That's the production you want to have in that spot.”
The Lancers got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Gorham ripped a double to left field to score Sarah Strong who tripled to lead off the inning. In the third, Erin Moore drove home Nikki Lowe to put CBU up 2-0. The Lancers added another in the fifth with Boyd homered to lead off the inning.
CBU unloaded in the sixth, scoring five runs to notch their sixth run rule of the year.
Three different Lancers drove in runs as Lowe led the way with a pair of RBIs while Moore and Nicole Shoemaker each drove in a run against College of Idaho.
CBU got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Shoemaker singled to bring home Moore. The Lancers added another in the third when Moore drove home Boyd with a ground out. Boyd and Sarah Hurlbut scored the final two runs when Lowe ripped a single up the middle.
Tory Ferreira (2-0) tossed a complete seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits and struck out six.
