SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Chelsea Gentry scored seven goals for California Baptist University, but the Lancers lost 14-6 to No. 11 Loyola Marymount and 16-10 to No. 14 Hartwick in the first day of the Triton Invitational.
Gentry was the only Lancer to score in the first half against the Lions, scoring four of her five goals in the first two quarters. LMU jumped out in front 2-0 before Gentry put CBU on the board with 5:50 left in the first. The Lions answered just 30 seconds later to take a 3-1 lead, but Gentry scored two straight goals to tie it at 3-3 with four minutes left in the first. That was the last goal CBU had for nearly 12 minutes.
The Lions went on a 7-0 run that went from the 2:24 mark in the first quarter until Gentry scored her fourth goal of the half with six seconds left to make 10-4 at intermission.
LMU blanked the Lancers 2-0 in the third quarter to carry a 12-4 lead into the fourth. Kylie Chevalier and Gentry netted a pair of goals, but the Lions matched CBU goal-for-goal to seal the win.
Rachel Easu led the way with three goals against the Hawks. Hartwick scored the first three goals of the game, but Easu and Chevalier scored back-to-back goals to get the Lancers within one at 3-2. Each team traded two goals as the Hawks held a 5-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Hartwick pushed it out to 6-4 just 26 seconds into the second quarter, but Collette Brown and Chevalier tied it at 6-6 with 55 seconds left in the half. That was just enough time for the Hawks to net two goals to take an 8-6 lead at the half.
The Hawks continued the run they started at the end the first half, scoring three goals to open the second half to cap a 5-0 run. Brown stopped the bleeding with 2:29 left in the third quarter, but 16 seconds later the Hawks pushed the lead out to 12-7. Hartwick added another goal with 1:04 left in the third, but Gentry scored her second goal of the game to make it 13-8, heading into the fourth quarter.
Tiffany Strickland scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter, but that wasn't enough to keep CBU from losing its fourth straight game.
CBU will open the second day of the tournament with Inland Empire rival Redlands at 8 a.m. and then will play either UC Santa Barbara or Maryland depending on the outcome of the game with Redlands.
