SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Kylie Chevalier scored a hat trick in the third quarter alone as California Baptist University won 11-7 over Redlands before falling 18-10 to No. 20 UC Santa Barbara in the final day of the Triton Invitational.
The Lancers (2-5) trailed just once the entire game against Redlands and that was at 1-0. Jennifer Grutz put CBU on the board first before Chevalier gave the Lancers a 2-1 lead late in the quarter. The Bulldogs tied it at 2-2 with less than a minute left in the first, but CBU answered scoring three straight to open up the second.
Grutz, Ashleigh Rood and Rachel Esau scored consecutive goals as the Lancers blanked Redlands 3-0 in the second quarter to take a 5-2 lead at halftime. Chevalier opened the third with a goal, but the Bulldogs cut the score to 6-4 on two goals less than 20 seconds apart. Collette Brown pushed the Lancer's lead back out to 7-4 before Chevalier gave CBU a four-goal lead at 8-4. Redlands the scored two straight to make it 8-6, but Chevalier scored with 17 seconds left in the third to give the Lancers a 9-6 lead.
CBU allowed just one goal in the fourth while Chelsea Gentry and Brown each scored a single goal.
The Lancers led UCSB, 2-1, early in the first on consecutive goals from Chevalier and Rood, but the Gauchos outscored CBU 8-1 through the rest of the first half to take a 9-3 lead at intermission. CBU got as close as five on two occasions, with the last coming at 12-7 in the third quarter, but UCSB sealed the game with a 6-3 run.
Gentry led the Lancers with four goals while Grutz notched a hat trick. Chevalier, Rood and Sarah Hunter all scored single goals.
