RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Jennifer Grutz scored five for California Baptist University in a doubleheader split with Pacific and Iona. Grutz notched her first hat trick in a 10-4 win over the Tigers before scoing two goals in a 10-9 loss to the Gaels.
The Lancers (15-9) jumped out to the longest winning streak of the year at four games with the win over Pacific. CBU scored the first four goals of the game as Kylie Chevalier and Collette Brown put the Lancers up 2-0 in the first quarter before Grutz scored back-to-back goals to start the second. The Tigers finally got on the board with 1:59 left in the second quarter, but Ashleigh Rood answered to give CBU a 5-1 lead at the half.
Tiffany Strickland gave the Lancers a 6-1 lead with a 6-on-5 goal and added another less than a minute later to take a 7-1 lead. Pacific scored with 19 seconds left in the third and opened the fourth with a goal to cut it to 7-3, but Brown put away a five-meter goal and Grutz wrapped up her hat trick with a 6-on-5 goal. Melissa Shepardson put the finishing touches on the win with the fourth 6-on-5 goal of the game.
CBU was 4-for-8 on 6-on-5 chances while holding the Tigers to just 1-for-6.
Camryn Rogers also posted 12 saves in the win.
Grutz scored a goal in each of the first two quarters, but couldn't come up with a late goal in the final quarter in the loss to the Gaels. Iona's Kathleen Link recorded seven of her nine saves in the second half including two big saves in the final 1:10 of the game. With 1:10 left to play, Chevalier was denied by Link on a shot attempt and the Gaels tried to counter. That's when Kristen Post came up with a big save to start the transition back for the Lancers. Grutz then put up a shot that was blocked again by Link to seal the win.
The Lancers jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first quarter on goals from Brown and Grutz before the Gaels scored consecutive goals to take a 3-2 lead. Chelsea Gentry netted a goal with 51 seconds left in the first to tie it at 3-3, but Iona scored with nine seconds left to take a 4-3 lead into the second quarter.
The Gaels pushed the lead to 5-3 before Shepardson and Chevalier scored two straight to tie it at 5-5. Iona retook the lead at 6-5, but once again CBU tied it on a goal from Grutz. The Gaels though finished out the half with a 3-0 run to take a 9-6 lead at the half.
Gentry scored the only goal of the third to bring CBU within two at 9-7 and opened the fourth with a goal to bring the Lancers within one. Gentry then completed the natural hat trick with a goal with 3:41 left to play to tie it at 9-9, but Iona's Lauren Peterson scored the game-winning goal with 1:17 left.
