RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Three must be Jennifer Grutz's lucky number as the junior two-meter recorded her 15th hat trick of the year in a 9-7 win over George Washington.
The Lancers (16-9) actually trailed 7-6 with 6:27 left in the game after the Colonials used a 3-0 run take the lead. CBU though closed out the game by scoring the final three goals.
The Lancers jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter on goals from Ashleigh Rood, Tiffany Strickland, Collette Brown and Grutz. Chelsea Gentry gave CBU a 5-2 with 4:01 left in the half. The Colonials answered right back to make it 5-3 with 1:53 left before Marissa Stamler put away a five-meter goal with to make it 5-4 at the half.
Grutz put the Lancers up 6-4 just 1:30 into the second half, but the Colonials' Tara Sullivan made it 6-5 with 2:24 left in the third. That goal sparked a 3-0 run that included a goal from Luciana Maggiolo who tied the game with a 6-on-5 goal with 37 seconds left in the third. Stamler completed the run to put the Colonials up 7-6 when she scored a goal from the right side with 6:27 left.
Melissa Shepardson tied it with 5:49 left with a five-meter goal and the Lancers retook the lead on a lob by Brown that kicked off the cross bar to put CBU up 8-7 with 4:30 left. Grutz then grabbed a rebound off a save and put one through on the right side of the net to put the contest away.
Camryn Rogers posted seven saves in the win.
The Lancers close out the Lancer Invite tomorrow when they take on Colorado State at 1 p.m.
