RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? California Baptist University was wishing that someone might remove what was blocking the goal in the first three quarters as Colorado State held the Lancers scoreless for the first three quarters in an 8-2 loss in the final day of the Lancer Invitational.
The Lancers (16-10) were 2-of-18 from the field and turned the ball over five times. Part of the 10 percent shooting from the field came as a result of 12 saves from the Rams' starting keeper Krystyna McCright. CBU trailed 5-0 before Jennifer Grutz finally put CBU on the board with a 6-on-5 goal with 6:54 left. CSU scored three straight over the next three minutes to climb out to an 8-1 lead before Collette Brown scored the final goal of the game.
Sarah Ostling scored the first goal of the game to give the Rams a 1-0 lead in the in the first quarter before Ali Pavlik put CSU up 2-0. McCright posted three saves in each quarter to blank the Lancers in the first half.
Pavlik then notched her second straight goal to give the Rams a 3-0 lead with 2:55 left in the third before Emily Chambers put CSU up 4-0 with 1:52 remaining. Ostling opened the fourth quarter with a goal to grab the 5-0 lead.
The Lancers were 1-for-4 on 6-on-5 attempts and the Rams missed their only 6-on-5 chance. Chelsea Gentry and Kylie Chevalier each dished out an assist while Ashleigh Rood recorded six steals. Camryn Rogers also had 11 saves.
The Lancers now spend the next three weeks on the road before closing out the 2009 season with the NAIA Women's Water Polo Invitational Tournament.
