RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? It's not too often a softball team gets to hang football like numbers on the scoreboard, but California Baptist University outscored Hope International 32-0 in a doubleheader sweep Saturday.
It was a game that was an away contest for the Lancers (36-2, 12-2 GSAC), but was played at John C. Funk stadium at CBU because Hope International couldn't reserve a field to host the Golden State Athletic Conference game. The Lancers won both games in five innings with a 14-0 win in the opener and an 18-0 win in the nightcap.
Nina Cabrales led the way for CBU, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs and four runs scored in the doubleheader. Cabrales went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a run scored, a triple and picked up the only stolen base of the game in the opener. She then went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap.
Ashley Boyd and Briana Corral each went 2-for-3 with Boyd scoring three runs and Corral scoring one in the first game. Nicole Shoemaker and Meagan Silva each drove in a pair of runs in a 1-for-3 day at the plate. Tory Ferreira (12-0) tossed the five-inning, complete game and allowed just three hits. She also struck out three and walked just one.
The Lancers opened the game with five runs in the first and unloaded in the second with eight runs to take a 13-0 lead. CBU added one more in the third to complete the 14-0 win.
Emma Holden (9-0) was just as brilliant in the circle in the nightcap. The freshman allowed just two hits and struck out nine while walking one. She faced just two batters more than the minimum. Kendall Gorham and Sarah Hurlbut drove in nearly half of CBU's runs. Gorham was 2-for-4 with five RBIs while Hurlbut was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Tina Galinato also drove in a pair of runs with her first home run of the season in her only official at bat of the game.
The Lancers scored 13 runs in the first two innings with six coming in the first and seven coming in the second. CBU pushed its lead to 15-0 in the fourth with two runs and closed out the game with three runs in the fifth.
CBU as a team went 24-for-57 (.421) at the plate with seven doubles, two triples and one home run. The Lancers also took advantage of 13 walks given up by the Royal pitching staff. Ferreira and Holden held Hope to just a .143 day at the plate and struck out 12 total in 10 innings.
The Lancers will now look to get back a game it lost in the first game of a doubleheader earlier in the year when they host Azusa Pacific, Tuesday, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
