RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? California Baptist University took on two of the nation's best in preparations for next week's NAIA Women's Water Polo Invitational. The Lancers (18-18) lost 11-5 to No. 13 Michigan before falling 11-6 to No. 9 UC Irvine.
Jennifer Grutz and Kylie Chevalier each netted a pair of goals in the loss to the Wolverines while Ashleigh Rood added one. Rood and Chevalier each posted a steal and an assist as well. Camryn Rogers notched nine saves.
The Lancers held a 2-1 lead after the first quarter, but the Wolverines reversed the score in the second to make it 3-3 at the half. Michigan put the game away in the third quarter scoring six goals and held CBU scoreless before each team traded a pair of goals in the fourth.
CBU was 5-for-24 from the field and 3-for-8 on 6-on-5 attempts.
Grutz also scored a hat trick against the Anteaters while Rood scored two and Chelsea Gentry scored one. Rood also posted a pair of steals and an assist. Rogers also recorded eight saves in the cage.
UCI blanked CBU 7-0 in the first half with four goals in the first quarter and three in the second. The Lancers scored three goals each in the third and fourth quarters to out score the Anteaters 6-4 in the second half.
The Lancers were 1-for-5 on 6-on-5 chances while UCI was 1-for-4.
CBU still has one more tune-up game at Pomona-Pitzer, Wednesday, before the NAIA Women's Water Polo Invitational Friday and Saturday.
